I am an emeritus professor with more than 20 years’ experience of distance learning and teaching at the Open University. I have designed and implemented language courses for online study involving regular use of synchronous voice-enabled e-tutorials. I have researched extensively in the field of computer mediated communication for language learning, with a particular interest in real-time group conversations in multimodal settings. I have run training workshops for language educators and for research students and researchers on four continents. Current interests: methodologies for the description and analysis of online learning conversations, co-construction of group cultures by language learners in various online and social working environments, and cultural hegemonies in computer-assisted language learning.
